call the midwife (2012)
christmas special

Nonnatus House is alive with preparations for Christmas. Chummy is arranging a nativity play with the Cub Scouts, Jenny is faced with a difficult case, and a young girl's predicament leads to a big decision.

Call the Midwife follows the lives of the nurses and sisters of Nonnatus House and their wider community in 1950s East End London. Loved by millions the world over, you can't help but have a smile on your face and a tear in your eye whenever you sit down to watch an episode.

And the first Christmas episode is no different. Its filled with jolly nostalgia which leaves you longing for simpler times when organising a rowdy group of cub scouts to do a Nativity play and macaroons that keep disappearing (into Sister Monica Jones mouth) were the least of your worries.

But it doesn't idolise the 50's either. We are given a stark reminder of the brutality of the time when teenage girl Lynette feels shamed into giving birth alone in an abandoned warehouse and we learn that old Mrs. Jenkins had to give up her five children to the workhouse.

Its both wonderful and tear jerking stuff at the same time reminding us that even in a tough world there is still hope. Kinda perfect for this time of year.
