Four misfits are suddenly pulled through a mysterious portal into a bizarre, cubic wonderland that thrives on imagination.
Gotta admit it - this is my first time venturing into the world of Minecraft. While there will be many who pick up all the Minecraft lore and Easter eggs, unfortunately I was completely oblivious to it all. While the story is a little paper thin at times, A Minecraft Movie is a fun, breezy flick filled with hilarious lines, absurd action and Jack Black having an absolute blast.
A mysterious portal pulls four misfits into the Overworld, a bizarre, cubic wonderland that thrives on imagination. To get back home, they'll have to master the terrain while embarking on a magical quest with an unexpected crafter named Steve.
For a game that is steeped in creativity and imagination, A Minecraft Movie lacks a bit of depth in the story it’s telling and the character’s it’s attempting to craft out here. The story is a pretty basic quest punctuated by Minecraft-isms from lava cooked chickens to simple villagers and the ability to make anything from scratch if you have the imagination for it. And that sense of narrative simplicity doesn’t really add a sense of peril to proceedings which, in the final act of the film - without giving spoilers, results in a situation where you kinda know that the characters aren’t really going to be in danger at all.
However, A Minecraft Movie is filled to the brim with colourful characters, Jack Black well, just being Jack Black. It’s a joy to see him rip out songs left right and centre, using tone, and utter absurdity to get the laughs. The most developed character is Momoa’s Garrett who, underneath the frat boy bravado which is all played to Momoa’s expense, is a guy who just needs a break.
My niece and nephew for whom Minecraft is a nostalgic trip down memory lane from their childhood (they’re all of 15 and 13) found it a fun ride. You can’t ask for more than that.
While the story is a little paper thin at times, A Minecraft Movie is a fun, breezy flick filled with hilarious lines, absurd action and Jack Black having an absolute blast.
