epic: elvis presley in concert

★★★★

starring: documentary

REVIEWER: jessy kerrigan-morley

Follows Elvis Presley, featuring never-before-seen footage and recordings.

Although I was never the biggest Elvis fan, I grew up listening to a lot of his music staying at my grandparents house every weekend. He was in the background of my childhood so I walked into Epic: Elvis Presley In Concert expecting nostalgia, instead what I got was to be genuinely moved.

What stood out to me straightaway was the quality of the restoration of the video and audio of these Las Vegas tapes, they’ve been handled with incredible care and love. The audio is fantastic and the visual performances are so colourful and immersive, genuinely spectacular. It didn’t feel like watching something “old” the quality makes it seem like these could have been filmed yesterday!

I was surprised that it wasn’t a traditional concert film despite the word concert being in the title of the movie, it’s not really a documentary either. Rather it fits somewhere in between, part time capsule, part tribute and a glimpse into the life of Elvis.

Even as a casual Elvis fan, I was reminded of the massive impact Elvis had on the history of music and where it has come to today. His voice is so iconic and his charisma is unmatched, it’s easy to see why he was so beloved by the people of the time.

Elvis may not be my favourite artist, but this film reminded me he’s always been a part of my story. It was genuinely reflective and nostalgic and I would highly recommend it for both Elvis and non Elvis fans alike.
