Inside of his book, adventurous Harold can make anything come to life simply by drawing it. After he grows up and draws himself off the book's pages and into the physical world, Harold finds he has a lot to learn about real life
Harold and the Purple Crayon is a comedy/fantasy adaptation of the classic children’s book of the same name by Crockett Johnson and features a goofy but endearing Zachary Levi as Harold in a charming and good-natured film about an imaginary man who enters the real world from the imagination of his author with the power of the Purple Crayon.
Harold, Moose and Porcupine live in an imaginary world drawn from shades of purple, with creation at Harold’s fingertips through the power of the Purple Crayon. Given to him by the film’s narrator, The Old Man, the Purple Crayon brings into existence anything drawn with it. One day, the Old Man is silent to Harold’s questions, so Harold draws a door into the real world to search for the Old Man himself.
The real world of Harold and the Purple Crayon is bright, colourful and increasingly filled with purple hued objects as Harold makes his way across the city in his search for the Old Man, making for a vibrant visual experience for the younger audience.
With support from Zooey Deschanel, Lil Rel Howery as Moose and our own Jemaine Clement as Librarian Gary, Harold and the Purple Crayon has a great cast that work well together to bring humour and a hefty dose of charm to a pleasant and tame film that families will all enjoy.
Jemaine Clement is great as an awkward George R.R. Martin-wannabe author with a crush on Zooey Deschanel’s Terri, who makes some interesting choices after learning about the existence of the Purple Crayon.
Harold and the Purple Crayon is a charming and pleasant adaptation of the classic children’s book that benefits from its talented cast and the licence the Purple Crayon provides for creativity and imagination.
