Bodyguard Michael Bryce continues his friendship with assassin Darius Kincaid as they try to save Darius' wife Sonia.
I can’t remember where I watched the original Hitman’s Bodyguard (was it on a plane?) but was struck by how well the filmmakers had worked around the strength of their main stars, Samuel L. Jackson and Ryan Reynolds with a pretty light script. This time around with the Hitman’s wife on board, not a lot has changed. While the script has moments that needed to be tightened up, The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard is a hilarious action stacked romp with Samuel L. Jackson, Ryan Reynolds and Salma Hayek at the top of their game.
The world's most lethal odd couple - bodyguard Michael Bryce and hit man Darius Kincaid - are back for another life-threatening mission. Still unlicensed and under scrutiny, Bryce is forced into action by Darius's even more volatile wife. Soon, all three are in over their heads when a madman's sinister plot threatens to leave Europe in total chaos.
The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard is pretty simple - they’ve gotta go save the world and get shot at in ever increasing inventive ways in the process. And in the midst of it all there are some great comedic moments to be had especially in the banter between the three stars with Reynold’s Bryce getting increasingly frustrated with L. Jackson’s Kincaid and his wife.
The film loses a bit of direction in the middle act with the trio’s objective seemingly unclear. Even at just over an hour and a half it feels like more could have been done to either save the second act or to trim it a wee bit.
That being said, The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard is a fun night out at the movies with some of Hollywood’s biggest stars in a cluster of action and laugh out loud comedy. What more could you wish for?
