The aptly named, Here We Go Again, Mamma Mia's second instalment is another feel-good dip into ABBA's greatest hits, oddly (yet fittingly?) set to a family's backstory on a gorgeous Greek Island. Too many elements to keep up with? Never fear, those familiar lyrics and sweet tunes will carry you through this hit franchise!

 

In the second film, we're back with Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) just prior to a fabulous re-opening of Donna's (Meryl Streep) hotel. Of course to celebrate the event you need all the major players in her life, including her three dads, Donna's Dynamos and perhaps a star-studded grandma too!

 

While Sky (Dominic Cooper) is learning about the hotel biz in the big smoke, Sophie is left to hold down the fort and make sure she's making her mum proud. As she polishes up the hotel, we are taken back in time to Donna's story, from college graduation to meeting Sam, Bill and Harry on her way to setting up a new life on stunning Greek Island, Skopelos.

 

Despite gratuitous servings of cheesiness, classic and overused musical moves and scenes, Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again is undeniably a cinematic treat. With lush colours, fun characters, a setting that anyone would lust over, endearing characters and a playlist to really take you back to your nostalgic good ol' days, it's bound to be a smash hit. 

 

The pure joy to be found in the film was hugely evident just seeing the movie goers around me. Young and old were singing and humming, there were tears and bundles of chuckles. In fact, it was the humour that charmed me the most - keep a special eye out for the restaurant owner's (Lazaros') mother - she is a real treat!

 

Lily James as young Donna turned out to be a golden addition, with Lily's sweet singing voice and portrayal of a winsome Donna totally on point. 

 

You can't help but understand why this franchise will no doubt be a roaring success. It's nostalgic escapism at it's best - plus you can take both your mum and your tweens to it and have a ball.

While a touch cringey in parts, it's easy to get immersed in the sweet story and music to match.
