red, white and brass - on stage

★★★★★

The successful 2023 film Red, White and Brass has been adapted to the stage by playwright Leki Jackson-Bourke for an Auckland Theatre Company production, and truly what an astounding adaptation it is. Filled to the brim with Tongan Pride, family drama, endearing characters and excellent choreography, Red, White and Brass is an essential and delightful stage experience.

The story of Red, White and Brass is a familiar and feel-good one, which explores the changes in a young man named Maka and his cousin Veni through their schemes to get tickets to see Tonga play in the Rugby World Cup. One scheme following another results in Maka promising to deliver the best (and only) Tongan marching band to play before the sold out game of Tonga vs. France – giving him and his team 5 weeks to learn how to march, find and play brass instruments and represent rather than disappoint the proud Tongan community watching on.

Many of the film’s cast members return, including lead John-Paul Foliaki, reprising his role as Maka, the headstrong and charismatic leader of the impromptu brass band with a lot to learn. This is JP’s debut to the stage in an ATC production, and he’s magnetic. His performance brings so much to an already incredibly talented cast, all of whom imbue in the production much energy and heart; giving the highs and lows of the story their power.

The direction and creative teams driving this production of Red, White and Brass have brought together a refined and riveting stage experience: music and choreography are standouts, bolstered by excellent costume and production design.

Red, White and Brass is an essential and delightful experience that adapts the 2023 film hit to the stage. Brimming with talent, heart and endearing Tongan pride, Red, White and Brass is a triumph.
