Aardman is very much a part of my pop cultural upbringing. From Wallace and Gromit Techno Quest magazines (with free floppy discs) to watching Chicken Run with my mates and subsequently creating a school renowned legendary impersonation of Nick and Fetcher, they were very much a part of my childhood. So to now have kids of my own and still being a massive fan of Aardman's work, I couldn’t wait to introduce them to it all on the big screen. With its wonderfully brought-to-life clay characters and silly slapstick jokes that will have kids of all ages laughing throughout, Shaun the Sheep: The Beast of Mossy Bottom is another great addition to Aardman’s film collection and fantastic entertainment for the whole family.
 

As Halloween approaches, the residents of Mossy Bottom Farm are eagerly preparing for the festivities—until the accident-prone Farmer destroys the flock’s treasured pumpkin patch. Determined to put things right, Shaun turns mad scientist, but his experiment quickly spirals out of control. With the Farmer mysteriously missing and a wild, hairy beast roaming the woods around Mossingham, Shaun and the flock must overcome their fears, solve the mystery and save Halloween in a monstrously funny family adventure.

Shaun the Sheep has to be one of the rarest of creatures: a whole film with barely a word of dialogue spoken. But what makes it thoroughly entertaining, for kids and the young at heart, is it knows what kind of film it is, primarily for children, and it makes a film just for them.

So its silly, colorful, filled with jokes that made us all (two, four, forty) giggle with laughter throughout. While one or two scenes could be a little scary for some kids, even those scenes of beast transformation are done with a twinkle in the eye, a kind of whimsy.

It’s hard to put my finger on what exactly the magic is. There’s this warmth about the film that I don’t think is down to purely nostalgia. Its part its British humor and sensibility, the beauty in its painstaking hand made craft of it all, and the cheeriness of the story and its characters. A cracking film indeed.
