REVIEWER: lyall carter

Star Wars series that takes viewers into a galaxy of shadowy secrets and emerging dark-side powers in the final days of the High Republic era.

In over a decade since Disney have owned the rights to the Star Wars universe, The Acolyte feels like a brave, bold step in the right direction. This will be the first production that will not be tied to previous tales and characters, having to rely purely on its own unique storytelling, character creation, and world building instead of leaning, as some previous productions have, purely on nostalgia over substance. This truly feels like a galaxy far, far away.

An investigation into a shocking crime spree pits a respected Jedi Master (Lee Jung-jae) against a dangerous warrior from his past (Amandla Stenberg). As more clues emerge, they travel down a dark path where sinister forces reveal all is not what it seems…

Even though The Acolyte is its own, stand alone beast, it really does feel Star War-sy. Like old school Star Wars, not in the same vein as the gritty, grounded brilliance of Andor, but the popcorn flick, breeziness of the original trilogy.

The Acolyte is stacked with characters that you will fall in love with, played by brilliant character actors. There’s a mystery that lies at the very heart of the narrative that will draw you in and grab you hook line and sinker too. If it seems like I’m being kinda vague, it’s that I just really don’t want to spoil it for you; it really is that good. It may take half an episode to really connect in, but once you’re there, you will be waiting impatiently for the next episode to drop.

The exposition is brief, unlike some of the prequels, and is punctuated with quick, sharp, punchy action that will truly entertain. The world building is bright and popping with color while the creature design is bold and fresh too.

Amandla Stenberg is a standout here in the lead role, having to walk a pretty fine line with her performance while Lee Jung-jae is a consistent and comforting presence throughout.

A breath of fresh creative air, The Acolyte expands the Star Wars universe through its bold storytelling and world building, bringing us an intriguing adventure stacked mystery jam packed with intriguing characters.
