Barry Allen uses his super speed to change the past, but his attempt to save his family creates a world without super heroes, forcing him to race for his life in order to save the future.

It’s no secret that the DC Cinematic Universe, aside from Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman, James Gunn’s Suicide Squad, and Robert Pattinson’s incarnation of The Batman, has struggled to keep pace with the juggernaut that is the MCU in the consistent quality of its cinematic output. But then there is The Flash

A breath of fun, fresh, frantic air, The Flash is a thoroughly entertaining ride from start to finish, led by a magnificent performance of not one but two Ezra Miller’s.

Worlds collide in The Flash when Barry uses his superpowers to travel back in time in order to change the events of the past. But when his attempt to save his family inadvertently alters the future, Barry becomes trapped in a reality in which General Zod has returned, threatening annihilation, and there are no superheroes to turn to.

While The Flash follows the tried and true superhero backstory - parent dies in horrible circumstances, their child seeks to fight for justice, gets in some kind of accident resulting in them receiving superpowers - its the embodiment of the main character, the pacing, and themes it explores that makes The Flash stand out from overcrowded superhero pack.

The Flash knows when to take itself seriously and when to have a bit of fun with the story, characters, and themes that it's exploring. It gets its narrative beats pretty much on point, never stealing from dramatic moments with a misplaced joke while never taking itself too seriously either.

The nostalgic tips of the hat to characters past generally work, with Michael Keaton’s reprise of Batman feeling not only narratively earned, but fresh and adding to the story at large. Unfortunately some of the CGI sequences leave a lot to be desired and can distract from a full immersion into the story if you let it.

But this film belongs to Ezra Miller. They are absolutely superb, infusing the film with all of its passion and truly giving it a beating heart. This is the most memorable superhero character stand alone film debut we've had in such a long time. Miller is magnificent.
