The incredible story of the greatest cycling race in history, the 1989 Tour de France, and how American Greg LeMond completed one of the most inspiring comebacks in history.

The Last Rider is a thrilling documentary about the amazing life and career of professional road racing cyclist Greg LeMond leading up to the legendary 1989 Tour de France.

Greg LeMond is a brilliant subject here, with director Alex Holmes letting him tell the audience his own story right to the camera. Recent interviews alongside contemporary newsreel footage and interviews from that point in his career, combined with recent interviews with his wife Kathy LeMond and former competitor Pedro Delgado all serve to provide context, and more importantly to corroborate Greg’s retelling of the story of his career.

While The Last Rider benefits certainly from having an engrossing tale to tell, especially when told directly by the person at its centre, the strong filmmaking it demonstrates from director Alex Holmes helps elevate an engrossing story into a thrilling film and an essential watch. For people unfamiliar with Greg LeMond’s story, The Last Rider will pull them into a nail biting journey; for people who are in the know, The Last Rider is an earnest and compelling presentation of the amazing story of one of cycling’s greatest.
