A group of friends trapped in a time loop, where mysterious foes are chasing and killing them in gruesome ways, must survive until dawn to escape it.

Following the last known locations of her sister before she went missing a year ago, Clover and her friends hope to find answers and end up in a far deadlier situation they could have ever imagined.

Until Dawn runs in a familiar fashion with a group of friends, remote location, mysterious house, masked killer. There are classic horror moments, a few jump scares, creepy background stalkers, running away from the villains and plenty of gore.

The film is based on the 2015 video game of the same name. Now while I love horror films, my hours playing horror video games are next to nothing, there is something different about observation and active participation. I can’t tell you how loyal the film is to the game, if it hits the same beats and terror.

But what I can say is that it does fulfill the genre boxes. It’s not bringing anything new to the screen but it does have its own story to tell. Not being familiar with the source material really did get me feeling like I was a step behind, there were multiple explanations and bits of lore that never felt like they were fully fleshed out enough to be anything more than a passing idea.

There is a wonderful montage which delights in the fear factor and creativity of the Until Dawn world. I do feel like we didn’t have enough fun with all the unique creatures and got stuck with a few ‘classics’ . It was nice to feature what could be possible in this universe.

Until Dawn brings a horror game to the big screen showing that it can be a little tough to cram a whole game into one film but brings the same elements that any horror fan will enjoy.
