★★★★

The lone survivor of an onslaught of flesh-possessing spirits holes up in a cabin with a group of strangers while the demons continue their attack.

Is Evil Dead II a sequel, a parody, or a re-imagining of the first instalment? Actually is a bit of all of the above and its bloody hilarious and frightening in equal measure.

Ash Williams (Bruce Campbell) once again battling horrifying demons at a secluded cabin in the woods. After discovering an audiotape left by a college professor that contains voices reading from the Book of the Dead, Ash's girlfriend Linda (Denise Bixler) becomes possessed by evil spirits that are awakened by the voices on the tape. Ash soon discovers there is no escaping the woods.

Evil Dead II is one of the most bizarre, hilarious, trippy and gory films ever made. It parodies not only the splatter genre but the previous film. But it does it with such affection for the splatter genre that it feels like a blood curdling tribute to the genre that birthed it.

Its also really, really freakin' crazy too. It feels as if celluloid could trip out then Evil Dead II is where and when it really did. Bruce Campbell is superb again as the square jawed, all American hero as we all root for him to defeat the evil dead.

One of the craziest horror comedies of all time, Evil Dead II is a hands down cult classic of the highest order.
