★★★★

Centers on the real-life story of the flamboyant and visionary American founder of Selfridge's, London's department store.

Mr. Selfridge - an ITV production that ran for four seasons from 2013 - 2016 and follows the life of from American Harry Selfridge and his London department store from 1908 - 1928.

Its difficult to aptly review an entire television season let alone four seasons as some seasons and indeed some episodes are more stronger than others.

On the whole Mr. Selfridge is a brilliant, decadent period drama, which in some quarters was unfavourably compared to ITV's more well known period piece Downton Abbey. Mr. Selfridge is its own beast and quite a wonderful one at that.

The interior of the store is absolute exquisite in its scale, scope, and detail so much so that you feel as if you are immersed in the very depths of an early 20th century department store. To realise that its a set and not a location shoot just adds to the wonder. The costumes are lavishly beautiful, the cast is terrific, and the scripts are on point.

But Mr. Selfridge belongs to Jeremy Piven who gives an enigmatic, boisterous and at times tender performance as Harry Selfridge as he finds the emotional core of the character throughout trial and triumph and clings to it for dear life.

Need your period drama fix? Break out the cups of tea, the scones drenched in strawberry jam, and put your feet up and binge your way through Mr. Selfridge.
