Poirot: early case file collection

Starring: David suchet

He is fastidious, refined, ingenious, incomparable. And, bien sûr, the greatest detective that ever walked the earth! He is Hercule Poirot and in this early 8 series collection, he determines the facts, unravels the truth and exposes the murderer with more unparalleled brilliance and ego than ever before.

I love Agatha Christie and grew up reading her books and with David Suchet on a rainy afternoon as the quintessential Hercule Poirot. The mystery, the intricate plotting, and the pompous but lovable Hercule all made for a wonderful afternoon of entertainment.

Finally we have all of the first 8 seasons in one massive 28 disc, over 3000 hours, 50 story collection. Definitely bang for your buck!

Here are my five favourite Poirot stories from the collection:

The ABC Murders (Series 4)

Poirot receives taunting letters from a serial killer who appears to choose his victims and crime scenes alphabetically.

This is undoubtedly one of Poirot's most famous cases with intricate plotting and a great guest cast including the terrific late Donald Sumpter.

The Adventure of the Egyptian Tomb (Series 5)

Shortly after opening an ancient Egyptian tomb, members of an English-American museum expedition start dropping off like flies. Can it truly be the Pharaoh's curse? Poirot travels to Egypt to unravel the mystery.

Whenever you mention Poirot and Egypt you automatically think Death on the Nile (currently being made into a feature film by Sir Kenneth Branagh) and The Adventure of the Egyptian Tomb is largely forgotten in the shadow of it. Poirot can be quite grand in scale but this is a more intimate story.

Murder on the Links (Series 6)

While Poirot and Hastings are holidaying in France, a businessman tells Poirot that his life is in danger. The next day he is found stabbed to death on a nearby golf course.

Poirot is never better than when he has to deal with a detective investigating a crime who is no match for his little grey cells and here its a treat to watch. Beautiful French countryside, Captain Hastings, and a great little mystery make for a wonderful watch.

The Murder of Roger Ackroyd (Series 7)

Poirot comes out of retirement when his industrialist friend is brutally murdered a short while after a local widow who was suspected of killing her husband commits suicide.

Another of Poirot's most well known and beloved cases, The Murder of Roger Ackroyd is a wonderful mystery to sink your teeth into.

Evil Under the Sun (Series 8)

Poirot's rehabilitative health retreat on an island resort becomes an even more stimulating mental exercise when a flirtatious film star is found strangled on a nearby beach.

Never holiday near Poirot as there will most certainly be a murder. The poor guy can't take a break and has to work while getting rest after a nasty turn. The ensemble cast here are one of the best in the whole series greatly adding to the telling of this murderous tale.
