I remember watching the first Toy Story film and being blown away not only by the story but by the visuals. They were completely revolutionary and game changing when it came to animation.

Pixar were the front runners for innovation in animation and not only have other companies abandoned hand drawn animation but so to has Pixar's parent company Disney. When the first Toy Story was released 3D animation was seen as a fad. Now because of the success of Pixar and in particular Toy Story 3D animation is now the norm.

But it wasn't just the form of the animation that Toy Story came wrapped up in that changed the game. It was their story telling techniques that changed animation forever. No musical numbers. No romance. Not a lot of humans (they changed this to great success with Up). 

​

And its only been in the last couple of years that studios have walked away from that model (Disney in Frozen and Moana). But it brought a new direction and emphasis to animation that changed everything forever. 

 

The story and the characters of Toy Story are what will forever etch them into the hearts and minds of audience members. This is down not only to the writers and animators but also down to the voice performances of Tom Hanks and Tim Allen. Bonafide classics. To infinity and beyond!
